The Governor's Giant Vision Business Competition is open to South Dakota residents with a new business idea or persons with a start-up business presence in South Dakota. If an existing business, you may have been in operation for no more than three years, as of the event date. Also, if an existing business, annual sales revenues may not exceed $500,000. If you have applied to Giant Vision previously, you may apply for the same idea only twice.

If you do not reside in South Dakota or you do not have a start-up business presence in South Dakota, you do not qualify for this competition.



  • Prepare business plan totaling no more than 10 pages. Limited attachments such as financials or supporting documents may be included in addition to the 10 pages.
  • Complete the online application form and confidentiality agreement.
  • Submit plan by midnight, on the deadline date.

If you are selected as a qualifying entry for this year's competition, you will be required to submit your social security number or a Federal Employer ID Number (FEIN) before receiving any potential prize money. We are required to report prize money awards to the Internal Revenue Service. You will be notified if we need this information.


To apply, you must prepare a business plan totaling no more than 10 pages. You are required to utilize the financial template which may be downloaded here (Excel download). Limited attachments (2-3 pages) that support your application may be included in addition to the 10 page maximum application.

Financial Template (Excel download) - You are required to submit at least basic financial projections for your company, utilizing this financial template.

Need help with numbers? The financial template is designed to help you along. This is a required document for participants in the business competition. Applicants need only complete the lines that apply to their business model. It is okay to skip items that do not pertain to your situation or to enter line items that do not appear on the template.
